July 30: OUR LADY OF GRAY

The shrine of our Lady of Gray is near Besancon in Northern France near Franche-Comte.  The image is made of oak of Montaigne, and was much honored in the country.  Miracles are attributed to intercession at the shrine.

The oak is believed to date from the time of the Druids, and crested one of the hills in the diocese of Malines.  The oak had an adventurous history until sometime after 1602 when it was cut up into small pieces and carved by a local craftsman into statuettes similar to the figure of Our Lady of Montaigu or Montaigne.  These statues were presented as a mark of respect to patrons of the shrine.
